Roulette Strategy: Myths

Roulette Strategy: Myths

Playing online roulette does not require an inordinate amount of skill, but it can be a lot of fun and players have the potential for big payouts. There are not too many strategic advantages a roulette player can give himself, but players are always trying. Here are two popular myths about online roulette strategy.

Some Roulette Wheels Are Biased in Favor of Certain Numbers

While this may have one day been true of roulette wheels at live casinos, it is probably no longer true there and almost certainly never true online. The number the virtual ball lands on in your online roulette game is determined by a random number generator and each number should appear with the same frequency over the long term. An online casino could conceivably change the software code to alter this but there is no reason to believe that they would do so.

Roulette Can Be Beaten with a Betting System

No betting system will change the cold hard odds related to this online casino game. A “Martingale” system, where a player doubles his bet every time he loses, figuring he has to win eventually and get even, will not work because A) the casino may put a limit on how much people can bet on an individual roulette spin and B) the casino can match doubled bets indefinitely, whereas an individual bankroll limits the amount of doubled bets that it will take to get even. This concept is known in probability circles as “the gambler’s ruin,” for what should be obvious reasons.
