NBA Conference Finals
The Boston Celtics host the Detroit Pistons in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final on Thursday (8:30 pm ET, ESPN). These rivals enter the best-of-seven series with a lot of playoff history between them: Boston defeated the Pistons in the 1968, 1985 and 2002 semis, and also knocked out Detroit in seven games in the 1987 East finals. Detroit eliminated Boston in the 1988 East finals, in round one in 1989, and in the 1991 semifinals.
Stanley Cup Final
The Detroit Red Wings face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2008 Stanley Cup final, with Game 1 on Saturday at the Joe Louis Arena (7:30 pm ET, VERSUS). Detroit advanced to the Cup final with a 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars in Game 6 of the Western Conference final Monday night in Dallas, winning the best-of-seven series 4-2. Pittsburgh blew out the Philadelphia Flyers 6-0 in Game 5 on Sunday to win the Eastern Conference championship 4-1.
Indianapolis 500
The Indianapolis 500 takes places Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana (Noon ET, ABC). Billed as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, the Indy 500 is one of the oldest motorsport events, and is considered one of the three most significant motor racing events in the world, with one of the largest attendances, and radio and television audiences, of any single-day sporting event worldwide.
Lucky Thirteen
So far, there have been twelve series played in the Stanley Cup playoffs and for the NHL, finally, they got exactly what they are looking for with the thirteenth.
What has been, at best, a lackluster post-season thus far from the marketing and marquee match-up perspective the league ended up with the two teams in the final they would have most likely picked from the start.
Penn favored over Sherk at UFC 84
The UFC Lightweight Championship will be on the line at UFC 84 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday.
BetED.com has Jay Dee “BJ” Penn as a -265 favorite to defend his lightweight title against “The Muscle Shark” Sean Sherk at UFC 84: Ill Will. Sherk is a +215 underdog.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship event will also feature light heavyweight bouts between Wanderlei Silva and Keith Jardine, and Lyoto Machida and Tito Ortiz.
