Red Sox close out series with Yankees
A three-game series that could have a dramatic effect on the AL Wild Card race wraps up Thursday as the Boston Red Sox visit the arch-rival New York Yankees (1:05 pm ET, NESN, YES). The Red Sox entered the series Tuesday with a slim, one game lead in the Wild Card standings, while the Yankees were five games back of Boston.

Chargers face 49ers
The San Diego Chargers visit the San Francisco 49ers in the final week of the NFL preseason schedule on Friday night (10 pm ET, CBS). The teams have split the past four meetings but San Diego has a 3-1 ATS advantage over that span. They last squared off on Oct. 15, 2006, when the Chargers bombed the 49ers 48-19, easily covering the 10-point road spread.

NCAA Football season kicks off at The Big House
The 2008 NCAA College Football season gets underway this week with a full slate of games, including the Utah Utes visiting the Michigan Wolverines at The Big House on Saturday (3:30 pm ET, ABC). Last season, Utah was 9-4 SU and 7-6 ATS, while Michigan was 9-4 SU and 7-5 ATS. There is a significant Under trend, as the total has gone under in seven of Utah’s past eight on the road, in five of Utah’s past seven overall, and in five of Michigan’s past seven at home.

Basketball in Beijing
The U.S. Men’s Basketball team gets its first real test when it faces Greece on Thursday (8 am ET, NBC, USA). The Dream Team has been looking forward to this game for two years, since Greece knocked off the U.S. 101-95 in the 2006 World Championship semifinals. Greece also beat the U.S. at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Favre makes Big Apple debut
Brett Favre makes his debut with the New York Jets when they host the Washington Redskins in NFL preseason action on Saturday (7 pm ET, NFL Network). Favre, the former Green Bay Packers’ quarterback and a future Hall of Famer, was traded by the Packers to the Jets last week after coming out of retirement.
Cubbies in Miami
The Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins open a three-game set in Miami on Friday (7:10 pm ET). The Cubs will start righthander Carlos Zambrano, who is 12-5 with a 3.22 ERA. The Marlins will counter with Josh Johnson. The righthander is 3-0 with a 3.19 ERA.
